And finally we come to the story of this particular piano… J. Becker factory was acquired by Schroeder in 1904, but the factory continued brilliant Becker production traditions. October revolution did not go well with the owner, fac...

3 pianos from the same piano maker. Up until the 2nd World War Concert stage sound was fully dominated by Bechstein's pianos and was forming the culture of sound that was a "standard" at the time influencing all manufacturers to follow the tone quality. This would probably still be true if Steinway did not bribe American pilots to make a "detour" from military targets and drop bombs onto Berlin...

Polonaise-fantaisie in A-flat major, Op. 61, is a composition for piano by Frédéric Chopin. It was dedicated to Mme A. Veyret, written and published in 1846. This work was slow to gain favour with musicians, due to its harmonic complexity and intricate form. Arthur Hedley was one of the first critics to speak positively of the work, writing in 1947 that it 'works on the hearer's imagination wit...

Significant sections of this are much too fast, rushed. The D flat major sections' left hand is so fast it has no rhythm. The E flat major sections' right hand is so fast it has no melody or contour (and unsurprisingly, the left hand is played too loud, to mask this loss). If you listen carefully, there are a fair number of mistakes either caused by - or being hidden by - playing 'as fast as possible'. For example, the right hand at the culmination of each E major section bumps noticeably into each subsequent octave as the pianist simply cannot play it that fast. This is a Scherzo - a 'joke', if you will - not a 'run for your life'. Presto, etc still have to be musical; sadly, there is music lost here in favour of excess haste.

In the vibrant musical circles of 18th-century Vienna, Ludwig van Beethoven was renowned not only for his revolutionary compositions but also for his tempestuous personality and unwavering dedication to his art. One particularly captivating story from Beethoven's life revolves around the creation of his monumental Symphony No. 9 in D minor, also known as the "Choral Symphony." In 1824, Beethoven, already grappling with profound deafness, embarked on a daring endeavor to compose a symphony that would incorporate voices-an unprecedented feat at the time. His vision was to set Friedrich Schiller's "Ode to Joy" to music, a poem celebrating the unity of all mankind. As Beethoven worked tirelessly on the symphony, his deafness grew more pronounced, isolating him from the world around him. Yet, his determination and creative genius propelled him forward. He labored over each note, imagining the grandeur and depth of emotion that would resonate through the symphony's four movements. The premiere of the Symphony No. 9 was a momentous occasion, held at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. Beethoven, despite his deafness, insisted on conducting the performance himself. As the symphony unfolded, its majestic melodies and stirring harmonies captivated the audience, transporting them through a journey of profound emotional intensity. However, it was the final movement that truly stunned the audience. As the choir erupted into the "Ode to Joy," singing of universal brotherhood and joy, Beethoven, lost in his silent world, continued to conduct. It was not until one of the soloists turned him around that he saw the audience on their feet, applauding wildly. The Symphony No. 9 in D minor stands today as a testament to Beethoven's indomitable spirit, artistic innovation, and unwavering belief in the power of music to transcend barriers. Despite his personal struggles and physical limitations, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony remains a pinnacle of classical music, a beacon of hope and unity that continues to inspire generations. Beethoven's ability to compose such a profound and monumental work despite his deafness underscores his extraordinary determination and resilience. His Symphony No. 9 is not just a masterpiece of musical composition but a testament to the enduring power of human creativity and the universal language of music.
